Introduction
While not, as many falsely believe, designated by the United
Nations as the world's most multicultural city, Toronto in the late 1990s is one of the
most ethnically diverse cities in the world. Much of this diversity has resulted from
post-World War II migration to the city from all parts of the globe. This bibliography
provides a listing only of books, monographs, research reports, and graduate theses that
deal with immigration and settlement in the Toronto area. Articles are not included here.
A good source of articles on Toronto's ethnic and racial groups is the journal Polyphony,
a publication of the Multicultural History Society of Ontario since 1978. Items in this
bibliography cover the entire history of Toronto and include all "ethnic" and
racial groups, including such institutions as the Orange Order. For ease of use, the
listings have been divided into three broad categories. The first of these contains a
variety of topics under the heading of General Works, while the second is subdivided on
the basis of Studies of Particular Groups or Communities, and the third is devoted to
works of fiction relating to the experience of immigrants in Toronto. Without doubt, items
have been missed that should have been included in this bibliography. I urge readers to
draw these to my attention via e-mail at the following address: mdoucet@acs.ryerson.ca
