Variable: Derived Visible Minority/Ethnic Origin (43)
DVisMin OE (43) Derived Visible Minority/Ethnic
Origin (43)
Definition 2:
This variable provides a distribution of the total population based on a
top-down approach using the 2001 Census population group question (Q.19) as
the primary data source.
The categories of this derived variable were specified by representatives of
the Centres of Excellence
on the Metropolis Project National Data Committee, in consultation with
Statistics Canada.
The derived variable lists the visible minority groups first (see the note on
the population group question for further information).
Responses that are not classified as visible minority groups are shown next,
disaggregated according to responses to the Aboriginal identity (Q.18) and
Ethnic Origin (Q.17) questions in the 2001 Census.
There is no double counting of respondents in this derived variable.
Respondents who provided more than one ethnic origin in the 2001 Census are
counted only once.
It should be noted that respondents who provided a multiple ethnic origin
response including Canadian and another ethnic origin are aggregated with
single responses of the other ethnic origin. For example in this table the
category "German" includes single responses of "German" as well as multiple
responses of "Canadian and German". (see the accompanying footnotes for more
information).
Because of the how this variable is constructed, therefore, users should be
aware that the counts of the specific ethnic groups and categories shown (for
example German or Northern European origins) will not be comparable with
published counts in standard 2001 Census products.
