Brief Description of the 1996 Census Tables Created by Canadian Heritage

  • These tables were created by Canadian Heritage. They were received by CERIS on three CDs. In total, the three CDs contain 139 tables. Because 11 tables are too big (due to a long list of geographical areas), they are split into two parts. As a result, users will actually see 150 tables on the three CDs, instead of 139.
  • The tables basically contain the same information as the 1996 Census Core Tables that CERIS received, but they have different table structures and organizations.
  • All tables are in Beyond2020 format. They are grouped into the following categories:
      • Place of Birth
      • Ethnic Origin
      • Visible Minority
      • Detailed Native Language
      • First Official Language
      • Family
      • Children
      • Youths
      • Culture
      • Parks.
  • Each CD also includes two htm-files: one is a list of tables; the other is a variable decoding file.
    • The first file provides a convenient way of accessing specific tables and data. In this file, each table title is accompanied by the names of the variables in the table; it also shows how many categories each variable has. The most useful is that each table title and variable name contains a hyperlink. By clicking on the table title you can actually open that table in Beyond 20/20; by clicking on the variable name you can view the specification for that variable.
